Cibelle

This Brazilian chanteuse is one of the most talented musicians to emerge from Brazil in recent times. A gifted individual, Cibelle was introduced to the world by way of Suba, the legendary Yugoslavian/Brazilian music producer who died shortly after releasing his first album, São Paulo Confessions. Cibelle featured prominently in that release, but her self-titled debut is something else. Exuberant, sultry, and experimental, she has a soft purr of a voice that just drives you wild. Deixa and Waiting are two great gems from her debut album, which many people compare to Bebel Gilberto’s debut also inspired by and produced by Suba. But Cibelle’s second album, The Shine of Dried Electric Leaves, featuring a collaboration with Seu Jorge titled Arrête Là Menina, is much more experimental, and features a mature singer who is not afraid of exploring all of her musical sensibilities. It reminds me a lot of Emiliana Torrini’s work, and the music is full of glockenspiels and other gadgets which are reminiscent more of Iceland artists such as Múm and Björk than anything Brazilian. But coupled with her Portuguese/English lyrics, such a combination is delightfully unique. Thanks Jan.

Esta brasileira é uma das mais talentosas artistas a sair daquele país em tempos recentes. Uma cantora dotada, Cibelle foi introduzida ao mundo por via de Suba, o lendário productor Yugoslavo que trocou o seu país de origem pelo espledor do Brasil e fixou lá residência até a sua morte trágica pouco depois da gravação do seu primeiro CD, São Paulo Confessions. A voz de Cibelle é destaque em várias músicas daquele album, mas o seu primeiro CD a solo é coisa doutro mundo. Sexy, confiante, e experimental, ela tem uma voz bastante cativante e sedutora, daquelas que te enlouquecem. Deixa e Waiting são duas excentes canções do seu primeiro album, que, por causa da produção e influência de Suba, é muitas vezes comparado ao primeiro album de Bebel Gilberto. Mas o seu segundo cd, The Shine of Dried Electric Leaves, contendo uma música feita com Seu Jorge (Arrête Là Menina) é muito mais único e experimental, destacando uma Cibelle que não tem medo em explorar todas as suas sensibilidades musicais. O album faz me lembrar de artistas Islândeses tais como Emilian Torrini, Múm, e Björk por causa das escolhas instrumentais e o seu ambiente electrónico. E juntando a sua voz magnífica cantando em português e inglês, o producto final é simplesmente encantador. Obrigado Jan.
