Late Nite Lounge Vol. 12: Luca, Leila, and Bebel

Bebel GilbertoSunday night arrives, confused as always. It’s not sure what it is – it’s a weekend night, but only in name. It’s not a particularly liked night. Sunday night makes people remember about next week’s to-do lists, it drives students to their homework desks, frantically trying to make up for the weekend’s proclivities, and it makes you curse silently about the injustice of it all.

Sunday night though is also a time for dreaming, for quiet reflection, for some downtime. And that’s where I can help you out. There might be few things better in life than listening to Bebel Gilberto’s Samba da Benção in a darkly lit room…it’s an experience in and of itself. Her smoky voice, almost breathless, quietly intimate even though she’s crooning evocatively into the microphone. The soft rhythms of the instruments, an orchestra for one.

Or try Luca Mundaca’s Cidade. The beat is slightly quicker, but the feel is still downtempo. The piano and the guitar complement each other and the soft, unobtrusive, jazz-style percussion allows Luca’s voice to shine through. But maybe you’re in the mood for a classic bossa, and Leila Pinheiro’s lovely Pra Iluminar is just that. The vocal range she displays in this song is remarkable and hearing a distinctive voice is a refreshing end to the week. Maybe Sunday night isn’t so bad after all…

Samba da Benção
Cidades
Pra Iluminar
